As automated driving systems become more prevalent, automotive manufacturers and suppliers face growing challenges in ensuring compliance with functional safety standards. A key issue arises when integrating hardware and software components that do not contribute to driving automation—yet are still subjected to stringent Automotive Safety Integrity Level requirements. Current safety frameworks rely on human intervention as a parameter for risk classification, but what happens when human intervention is no longer part of the equation?

Mihir Shah is an engineering leader in functional safety, systems engineering, and software development. With a strong background in safety compliance and electrified powertrain development, he has been key in creating safety and security-inclusive product development processes at Dana Incorporated, adhering to ISO 26262 and ISO 21434 standards.
As a Functional Safety Specialist at Dana, Mihir has led high-profile projects, including developing ASIL B/C/D systems for Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren, and Bugatti. His expertise includes developing ASIL D ready electronic control units and conducting functional safety assessments and audits. Mihir co-founded Dana’s Functional Safety College, training over 500 engineers and managers. Previously, at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), he advanced diagnostics and safety design for automatic and hybrid transmissions.
Recognized with awards like the Spotlight Applause and KROWN, Mihir holds a Master of Science with a specialization Control Systems from the University of Florida. An active contributor to the industry, he has presented papers and moderated discussions at conferences such as the Automotive IQ Functional Safety Conference, Tech.AD and SAE WCX. His recent work focuses on driving automation's impact on hazard analysis and risk assessments.
