With a MSc in Aerospace Engineering and a PhD in Human Factors, Richard started his career in 1990 as a research engineer leading the development of the Iowa Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa where he participated in seminal research in driving simulation including the simulator studies for the FHWA funded Automated Highway System. He left the University in 1995 to experience and learn from a corporate environment at ITT Automotive (now Continental Teves) where he led the brake simulation group. In 1997, because of the rapid reduction in the cost of computers and therefore the cost of driving simulators, he founded his own driving simulator company: Realtime Technologies, Inc (RTI) (www.simcreator.com). During his time at RTI, he built the most successful research simulator company in the US including multiple sales into Silicon Valley and many of the top automotive companies. This led to receiving the Tibbetts Award from the Small Business Administration (SBA) for the successful commercialization of a variety of driving simulation research and products leading to over $50 Million in total sales. With the rapid deployment of automated vehicles, Richard has returned to academia, to perform research in an open environment, supervise students and publish academic quality papers. He is the PI or Co-I on over £6 Million of research activity while leading the development of the University of Leeds Driving Simulator (uolds.leeds.ac.uk)
